Some interesting and informative facts about dandelions.

full dandelion flowering plant in ground

Dandelions, known scientifically as Taraxacum officinale, are often referred to as weeds, but they are actually a flowering plant in the family of Asteraceae, which is the same family as the daisy and sunflower. The name 'dandelion' is derived from the French word "dent de lion" which means 'lion's tooth' because of the jagged shape of the course leaves which resmble teeth. Other sources claim that the word dandelion descended from the Greek word 'leontodon' which translates to "lions tooth" in English. Other common names for this herb are: priest's crown, Irish daisy, monk's head, and blowball.
